The castle of Velburg: Once home to powerful lords, today a great viewpoint
The castle’s ruin is enthroned at the top of the mountain, called Schlossberg. The triangular installation had been damaged during the Thirty Years’ War (1618 – 1648), after which it was ablated, meaning: the roof was removed and with its stones the local parish church was extended and private residences were built. One can only speculate about the time that the castle was built. It was mentioned in written form for the first time in 1129. The castle burned down to the ground in 1450, but it was completely rebuilt afterwards.
Thanks to an exemplary joint action of Velburg’s associations during the 1980s the curtain wall and a gate of the castle were secured, the keep with a height of 12 meters was rebuilt and a wonderful viewpoint was created.
